Shannon airport is one of Ireland’s three largest airports. It offers flights to various destinations around Europe as well as offering connecting flights to the US. The airport offers enough facilities to make visitors feel comfortable before their flight.

If you want to relax in style before departing then try out the executive lounge. Here you can snack away on free nibbles and complimentary drinks. Catch up on what is going on in the world with free newspapers and WIFI. Or simply relax on the large and spacious sofas dotted throughout the lounge. You don’t need to be a member or fly business class to enjoy these services, just turn up at the airport and pay a 25euro fee to gain entry.

There are a small handful of bars and restaurants in the airport – mainly serving up pub grub. A popular choice is the Sheridan food pub, which has tasty dishes in a relaxed environment. Please note that there is no fine dining experiences available at this airport, so if you are the fussy type it may be advisable to eat before you arrive.

There is free public WIFI throughout the terminal. A bureau de change will let you covert money to or from Euros. If you are religious then there is a small oratory located in the airport which lets you have a quiet and private place to pray.

Car rental hire companies are located within the terminal building. You can book in person at the desks, or for better availability then book in advance through our online rental search.

Duty Free

For many people, buying duty free goods is all part of the travelling experience. Being able to get alcohol, cigarettes, perfume and other high priced items without the addition of tax can be very temping and also a great money saver if these are things that you buy regularly. It feels really great to be able to get something, that you really like at a reduced price. It is even better if you can get something, that you would not normally have bought, at a great low price which now makes it affordable for you.

Something that most people do not know is that Shannon airport was the first duty free airport. This was due to a new law called the customs free airport act. This meant that Shannon became a model for other airports to copy in the way that they dealt with duty free sales. These days, with the European Union as it is, there are no duty free sales allowed for passengers travelling within Europe. However, it is still valid if you are travelling outside of the European Union although it is possible that your home country will charge you tax for bringing the items in to the country if you have bought them abroad. There are usually restrictions on how many duty free items you can buy. So before you stuff your rental car full of booze, cigarettes and perfume, make sure that you check the restrictions first. Normally the items are only allowed to be for your own personal use as well.
